Max the mouse has a secret. He is a superhero! He can't run super fast, or jump really high, or do anything particular 'super' but still, he has a cape and he likes to wear his underpants over his trousers, if his mum isn't looking! He is sure that if he just tries hard enough he will figure out what his super power must be.

There used to be a little boy I saw every day at school when dropping off my daughter who was never without his cape. He would leap off the benches in the playground and run as fast as he could to make the cape stream out behind him! I now have my own small boy who has a Superman costume who enjoys 'flying'. There's a big attraction in being 'super' when you're only very small. Max is only a very small mouse, so he is very small indeed, but his story shows us that size doesn't matter. Things start out discouragingly for Max, however, as various baddies get the better of him. He's so fed up he hangs up his cape and gives up.

Then one day, the circus comes to town, and whilst the whole town is excited about the fire-eaters and the parade Max is the only one who notices that in all the excitement the circus performers are stealing all of the gold from the bank! He knows he can't let them get away with it, so he rushes to get his cape again. Max very bravely confronts the baddies, and he realises that his super power is that nothing can stop him from doing the right thing!

The artwork through the story is very colourful, with lots of movement and action. There are small hints of comic book panels on some pages, a nice introduction to the comic book style for little readers. I like all the sounds in jagged bubbles such as yee-harr! and ka-pow! Max himself is a sweet little mouse who wears large Clark Kent-style glasses when not in his superhero costume! The story works well as a read-aloud book, and would be good for sharing in playgroups and nurseries with large groups listening, or on a one-to-one basis. A good toddler introduction to superheroes!
