Lulu is getting ready for Christmas and she'd like you to help her to decorate the tree. After that there are cards to make, streamers to put up and then she helps to ice the cake. After that it's time to go outside and have a little bit of fun and build a snowman, but it made her hands cold so she came back inside again! At bedtime she hangs up her stocking and leaves a mince pie for Father Christmas and a carrot for his reindeer. In the morning she has some wonderful presents, but the best one of all is the one you might least expect!
This is a lovely book for those children just graduating from board books with its firm pages complete with pull tab for the decorating of the tree and tactile illustrations. The cake has shiny icing. The snowman has a rough and glittery surface and her stocking is of a wonderful stripy and soft material. I loved the real blinds in Lulu's bedroom which could be lifted to reveal Santa and his reindeer waiting in the snow. When she opens her presents Lulu's new teddy bear has a tummy that's as soft as suede and right at the end there's a lovely fold-out as we discover Lulu's best present.
It's not going to be a book with a long shelf life – start with it too soon before Christmas and there might be just a little too much excitement and it's going to lose its charm after the big day – but it's a lovely way of introducing a child to the idea of Christmas. It's not all about having fun and getting presents – there are jobs to be done and other people to be thought of – and most importantly for me it wasn't about getting truck loads of big presents, but about the pleasure of her new teddy or the simple pleasure of her favourite, which isn't furry, pink, sparkly or noisy (hurrah!).
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
