Daddy Panda and Baby Panda are spending the day together, and Baby Panda is thinking about all the different reasons why his daddy is brilliant. These range from how he smells safe and warm to the extra large breakfasts that daddy makes! There are lots of common, everyday situations, so little ones will enjoy making comparisons with their own lives, and discussing what makes their daddy amazing.
There's a good variety of activities through this rhyming book. We hear about the bears rollings and scrambling together, and about bathtime and bedtime stories. We also see how Baby Panda misses Daddy Panda when he's at work. We see Daddy Panda busy in his shed making a boat for the two of them to play with, and even a naughty step moment after Baby Panda has been discovered drawing on the walls! I liked the normality of day to day activities, and that Daddy's amazingness lay in the usual things that go on, on rather than special events and outings.
The illustrations really make this story with the two adorable pandas. I liked their fuzziness, and their little belly buttons! The picture where Daddy is at work and Baby Panda is interrupting his meeting to phone him is very funny - I liked the headings on the pieces of paper in front of all the other pandas at the work meeting such as Not Playtime and Important Busines Stuff. There's also a lovely picture of the two bears both dressed up in superhero costumes that is very sweet!
My favourite page is a lovely full page spread showing lots of things that the two pandas have done together in small pictures. It talks about 'the hundred things' Daddy Panda does, and there could well be one hundred pictures...I haven't counted them! But there are so many lovely things to look at on this page, with everything from the two pandas looking at art together, riding an elephant, having a pillow fight and splashing in puddles. We see them putting the twinkling lights onto the Christmas tree, jumping on space hoppers, watching fireworks and baking. There's something recognisable for everyone, and the pictures, though very little, are very cute and charming!
With its lovely mix of humour and sentimentality, this would make a lovely present for a dad to share with his little one. It encourages discussion, to see if you agree or disagree with Baby Panda's thoughts, and it also encourages hugs, since it's that sort of lovely book. Nicely gentle for bedtime reading, this is a sweet book all round.
