Sir Charlie Stinky Socks is on his way home from a little princess's birthday party when he realises he has left his sword behind, and he has to ride his mare back to get it. On the way he meets a stranger who offers some advice on the best route to get there. The stranger, though, is up to no good – he guides Charlie into obstacles, but Charlie finds his way out with the help of his power. Finally, he's back at the princess's castle, but what's up? Why has everyone turned to stone? Can Charlie save the day?

This story has all the trappings of a fairy tale, with our young boy finding his way through puzzles set for him and winning through, despite the best efforts of a wily wizard. The main appeal of the story though is in the colourful and witty pictures and the alliterative phrases, such as “burbling bog and murky mist. There are also several flaps to open up and look at, and also telling part of the story, a nice touch, though tired adults reading it to little ones may need to pay extra attention to keep the story order straight.

The source of Charlie's power is in the title of the book, his stinky socks. He's a very modern-day little boy hero, our Charlie.

This is quite a long story, with complicated pictures, and is probably better for preschool-age children with a longer attention span and the ability to enjoy the wordplay. My 3½ year old enjoyed it but it's a bit beyond his younger brother as yet. I think we will continue reading it though.
